Last October an area of Stoney Ck Reserve was taped off in order to stop mowing of the area following treatment of gorse. An unexpected outcome of this changed

mowing regime has been the growth of various native grasses that had not been previously identified. The grasses, without mowing, have had an opportunity to grow fully and produce seed thus making them identifiable!

Initially, Wallaby grasses, and Microlaena stipoides (Weeping grass) have been identified. This has lead to the Committee of Management of the Reserve to reconsider management of this area in order to best preserve the native grasses. Here are some before and after pics.

In November 2025, the Friends group began work with Lauren Linke and Brian Bainbridge from Hepburn Shire Council on a bio-diversity project on the Trent Ck Reserve. The project is in partnership with North Central Catchment Authority. Planting into jute matting has been successful. The grasses and Tall Carex are thriving. Across the road, Trentham Landcare have taken care of the planting around the Chinese Spring as part of the same project. Volunteers have continued working on the site to reduce weed infestation. Lovely rain recently has been great for the site.
