OUR UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT
What’s special about Trentham’s natural environment?
Our district is now recognised for its rich and complex ecosystem for which we are learning to be more conscious custodians, along with Djaara, the Traditional Owners.

Improved knowledge of our natural environment, particularly the Wombat Forest, has led to greater acknowledgement of the ways to restore and maintain this delicate ecosystem for the health of all and generations to come. Highlighting this are the various volunteer-led organisations, local native plant suppliers, supported by expert personnel in our local Shire Council, State Government agencies, as well as scientists working in various fields.
Residents and visitors alike can marvel at the range of flora, particularly in our waterway Reserves in Quarry and Bath Streets, and on the Wombat Trail. It is possible to observe and learn to identify our six local seasons, which also reflect weather variations we are coming to expect and accept.

Conservation efforts are particularly important for threatened and endangered species such as the endangered Powerful Owl (image) and Greater Glider, and the threatened Brush-tail Phascogale
The Bright-eyed Brown Butterfly is our flagship species to focus on restoring healthy waterways, which define the town and district. The story of its reappearance is a credit to local care and the removal of weeds such as Blackberry and Gorse.
The combined efforts of locals and other supporters have created a significant body of knowledge that is available to all in caring for this country in our everyday lives.

du Fermier
42 High St, Trentham VIC 3458

Nestled in the heart of Trentham, du Fermier is an intimate French-inspired dining experience created by renowned chef Annie Smithers. Set within a charming country shop front the restaurant embodies warmth, simplicity, and a deep connection to the land.
Each meal reflects the rhythm of the seasons, with ingredients sourced directly from Smithers own farm at nearby Babbington Park. There is no fixed menu – guests are invited to savour a set, multi-course meal that celebrates rustic elegance and honest flavours.
The atmosphere is homely yet refined, with an open kitchen and heartfelt hospitality. du Fermier captures the essence of French provincial cooking in the Australian countryside – thoughtful, sustainable and profoundly personal.
