In 2010, construction on an extension to the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre (cnr Market and High Streets) was halted when a substantial hole opened up amid the excavations. The void was found to be an old mine shaft, about 3m wide and at least 3m deep. After further inspection, the hole was filled with concrete, and building continued ...
But ... Why was there a mine shaft in the middle of Trentham township?
In seeking an answer, local Geologist Steve Macklin has studied the formation beneath our streets and sought out the stories of early European and Chinese gold seekers. This convergence of geology and history, anecdote and fact, has led him on a fascination journey into Trentham's golden past.
