H5 Bird Flu - Hepburn Shire Council

Following a recent report of dead ducks in Trentham, in an area used by dog walkers, we'd like to share some guidelines for pet owners.

• Keep dogs on a lead in areas with native wildlife.

• Do not allow pets to investigate or eat dead animals.

• Keep cats from roaming and hunting wildlife.

• Do not touch sick or injured wildlife with your bare hands

If you suspect H5 bird flu in birds, mammals, poultry or other captive birds, report it immediately by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 or to DEECA online.

H5 bird flu: current situation

H5 bird flu is present in wild birds in Victoria. Bird flu cannot be controlled in the wild.

From 20 August, bird flu reporting in Victoria has changed to align with the national reporting framework.

We now report H5 bird flu events, rather than individual detections. The new number of positive events captures all previously reported individual confirmed detections.

H5 bird flu has not been detected in poultry.

If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife, do not touch them. Avoid direct contact. Record what you see. Report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline or using the form below.
